PE Days

Monday and Wednesday

Please wear PE kits to school only on these days. No earrings please.

Homework.

Homework is set every Friday on Dojo and is due the following week. It helps reinforce what your child has learned in class and encourages independence and good study habits. Please support your child in completing their homework on time – and as a little extra motivation, they earn 5 Dojo points for doing so!

Maths:

By the end of the academic year, Year 2 pupils are expected to know and rapidly recall the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. These can be practised regularly using TT Rock Stars. Your child was given their login details in Term 1; if they are unable to remember them, please let us know and we will be happy to help.

Reading

Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school every day. Books are changed every Tuesday.

Aim to read with your child at least five times each week and remember to sign the reading record, noting any comments or observations.

You can deepen your child’s understanding of the text by asking questions, exploring new and interesting words using a dictionary, and developing inference skills by asking questions such as “Why do you think that happened?” or “What do you think will happen next?”

Spelling:

In Year 2, we have been working hard to practise our Common Exception Words. These are words that do not always follow the usual spelling rules, so we need to learn them by sight and through regular practice.

The children have been reading, writing and spelling words such as because, beautiful, could, should, and people in different activities throughout the week. We practise them in fun and engaging ways, including spelling games, sentence writing and quick-fire challenges.

Regular practise at school and at home helps the children to become more confident readers and writers. We are so proud of the effort they are putting into learning these important words!

Term 6 Jesuit Virtues: Grateful and Generous

CST Focus: Subsidiarity and Promoting Peace

Being grateful means recognising the many gifts we receive from God and from the people around us. It is about appreciating what we have, saying thank you, and reflecting on the blessings in our lives. Being generous means sharing our time, talents and resources with others, especially those who may need our help.

Subsidiarity reminds us that everyone has a voice and a responsibility to contribute to their community. It encourages people to work together and make decisions at the most local level possible, empowering individuals to take action and make a difference. Promoting Peace calls us to build positive relationships, resolve conflicts with kindness and understanding, and work towards a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

This term, we will encourage our children to show gratitude for God's gifts, act generously towards others, become peacemakers in their communities, and recognise that everyone has a role to play in creating a more just and peaceful world.

Term 5 Jesuit Virtues: Intentional and Prophetic

CST focus- Solidarity and Distributive Justice

An intentional person is someone who lives deliberately; someone who builds up their own worldview and then tries to live by it.  To live intentionally is to march to the beat of a different drummer.

Being prophetic is about being seen to do good and about speaking out for what is right.  Good news is only good news if it is announced.  Being prophetic isn’t about telling the future; it is about living out God’s future today.

Term 4 Jesuit Virtues: Compassionate & Loving

CST focus- Option for the Poor

Start of this term we made Lent promises.

RE

Term 6

RE:

This term in Religious Education, Year 2 will be exploring the question “Who is my neighbour?” through the parable of The Good Samaritan. The children will learn how Jesus taught us to show kindness, compassion and respect to everyone, regardless of their background, and will reflect on how they can be good neighbours in their own lives.

We will investigate how Christians put these teachings into action by serving others in their local and global communities. The children will learn about projects that help those in need and discover how Christian communities work together to make a positive difference in the world.

As part of our learning, we will also deepen our understanding of Judaism. The children will explore the importance of Shabbat (the Sabbath), learn about the Torah, discover why it is written in Hebrew, and find out about the work of a Sofer (scribe). Through encounters with different faith traditions and communities, the children will develop respect for the beliefs and experiences of others.

Throughout the term, we will encourage pupils to reflect on how communities can be transformed when people act with kindness, respect and understanding towards one another.

Living Out the Fruits of the Holy Spirit 🍎🕊️

In RE, Year 2 explored the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and discussed how these special gifts help Christians to live good and holy lives. The children learned to name the fruits and thought about how they can show them in their own daily actions through kindness, patience, love, self-control, and helping others. We also looked at how saints and holy people demonstrated these virtues in their lives. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas and making links between the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and our school values, reflecting on how they can be the best versions of themselves each day. ✨💜

Term 5

RE:

This term in RE, the children will recap the key events from the Resurrection to Pentecost, learning about the Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. They will explore how the Holy Spirit helped the apostles, especially Peter and Paul, to be brave and share the Good News.

We will learn about the Conversion of Saul and how his life was transformed by an encounter with Jesus. The children will also be introduced to the Fruits of the Holy Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control — and reflect on how we can live these out in our own lives.

Through scripture, discussion, prayer and creative activities, the children will deepen their understanding of how the Holy Spirit helps Christians grow closer to God and show love to others.

Term 4

RE:

This term, Year 2 will follow Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem, learning about Holy Week and the joy of Easter. Children will explore Palm Sunday, the Last Supper and Good Friday, and reflect on how Jesus teaches us forgiveness and love. During Lent, we will think about making better choices, saying sorry, and becoming closer to God through prayer, fasting and giving. We will also learn about the Easter Vigil and its powerful symbols of light and water, reminding us that Jesus is the light of the world.

Term 3 in RE, we explored stories from Luke’s Gospel to help us understand God’s love and forgiveness. We learned about John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus, the Baptism of Jesus and temptation (thinking about making good choices and saying sorry), and Jesus’ miracles that show God’s care—like healing the paralysed man and calming the storm. We also learned that Jesus chose his twelve apostles and that Catholics ask for forgiveness through prayer, including the Our Father. We finished with the Parable of the Lost Sheep, reflecting on the comforting message that God looks for us, welcomes us back, and rejoices when we return.

Term 3

RE:

In term 3 we are focusing on key themes and stories from the journey of Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem. It introduces important concepts such as sin, reconciliation, miracles, parables, forgiveness, and baptism, helping children build a foundation of faith and understanding.

Each section explains a key term or story in simple language, with images to engage young learners and help them connect with their learning. This overview helps families follow the themes taught in class and encourages discussion at home.

We hope this helps you support your child’s spiritual growth and understanding of our faith journey.

Year 2 Visit to the Library

Year 2 had a wonderful time during their visit to the local library. The children thoroughly enjoyed this exciting experience and were welcomed by the lovely librarian, who read them a fantastic story. Everyone listened beautifully and loved engaging with the book and discussing the characters.

After the story, the children used their imaginations to suggest ideas for creating a brand-new character. The librarian brought their ideas to life by drawing the character as the children described its appearance and personality. It was wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm shine through as they worked together to create something unique.

A huge thank you to the library staff for making our visit so enjoyable and inspiring. Year 2 left feeling excited about books and eager to continue their reading adventures!

Term 5

Tuesday 12th May 2026

As part of our enquiry “What is Home?”, Year 2 became young scientists as they explored the fascinating world of microhabitats and minibeasts. In class, the children learned that microhabitats are small environments where living things can find the food, water, air and shelter they need to survive. They discussed different types of minibeasts and predicted which ones they might discover.

We then took our learning outdoors and headed onto the school field for an exciting minibeast hunt! The children carefully explored different microhabitats, looking under logs, leaves and stones to observe creatures in their natural habitats. They discovered a variety of minibeasts and thought carefully about why these habitats made good homes for them.

The children showed fantastic curiosity, teamwork and respect for nature as they investigated the question of what makes a good home for living things

Trip to SS Great Britain
Term 4

On Tuesday 17th March Year 2 pupils had an exciting and educational visit to the SS Great Britain. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day, which made exploring the historic ship even more enjoyable.

During the trip, the children learned about how the SS Great Britain was designed and built, and discovered that it is now 182 years old and 98 metres long. They explored the different areas of the ship and learned about the experiences of passengers travelling in first, second, and third class.

A highlight of the visit was learning about life on board for third class passengers. The children were fascinated (and a little shocked!) to find out that food, such as hard biscuits, sometimes contained small bugs, which passengers had to tap out before eating.

They also discovered how long journeys would take in the past, including two weeks to travel from Bristol to New York and up to two months to reach Melbourne, Australia.

The visit helped the children understand how the SS Great Britain changed the way people travelled around the world, making long-distance journeys more achievable.

It was a memorable trip that brought history to life and sparked lots of curiosity and discussion back in the classroom.

The Big Sing
Term 3

On Monday 9th February, our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils enjoyed a joyful and uplifting morning as they took part in The Big Sing at St Michael’s Centre, Stoke Gifford. The event brought together children from several local schools for a wonderful celebration of music and singing.

Led by a talented vocal specialist, the session was full of energy, enthusiasm and beautiful harmonies. Our pupils represented the school brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow as they sang together as part of a much larger choir—truly a memorable morning for everyone involved!

Term 4

Enquiry

The children have now come to the end of their enquiry into the big question: “What could our outdoor area be made from?”

All the children have worked hard throughout this unit, exploring various materials and scientifically investigating their different properties and suitability. As their final outcome, the children agreed that a suitable material for their outdoor learning area would need to be a strong metal, such as steel, and that it would need to be joined by welding.

The children then create small models using cardboard, straws, tape and paper.

Term 3

Enquiry:

This term, the children will be exploring their new enquiry topic with the big question: “What could our outdoor area be made from?” They will investigate different materials and their properties, and then use what they have learned to design and create something interesting for our outdoor learning area.

Term 3

Enquiry-

Our enquiry from last term, 'How are schools the same?', is nearly complete!

We’ve been exploring, comparing, and learning – and we can’t wait to share our findings- Please see out class blog for our latest updates!

Term 3: Being a Geographer – End of Enquiry Challenge

As part of our Being a Geographer enquiry, the children explored the big question: “How are schools the same?”

Working in groups, the children compared two schools from different parts of the world and created fantastic posters to show what they discovered. They used pictures to spot similarities and wrote full sentences to explain their ideas clearly and confidently.

The posters share interesting facts about what school life is like in different countries, including the physical features of the places where the schools are located. The children also impressed us by using geographical vocabulary to explain their thinking.

We are very proud of the teamwork, curiosity, and geographical skills shown in these posters. Please enjoy looking at the photos below and celebrating the children’s learning with us!
