Jesuit pupil profile: Virtues and Values

At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we embrace a set of virtues and values that guide our daily lives and interactions. These values and virtues help us reflect on the important question:

Our pupils are continually growing and encouraged to demonstrate these values and virtues in everything they say and do.

We concentrate on a different pair of virtues each half-term, exploring their meanings and how they can translate into meaningful actions. This approach encourages our pupils to embody these virtues through their work, play, and prayer.

Our Friday Celebration Prayer and Liturgy plays a pivotal role in our recognition of virtuous behaviour. During this event, every teacher awards a certificate to a pupil they have observed exemplifying the virtues of the term. This recognition serves as an inspiration for our pupils, motivating them to aspire to receive this certificate.

To deepen our understanding and application of these virtues, we have paired each set with a different principle of Catholic Social Teaching. This integration reinforces our commitment to living out our faith and encourages our pupils to actively serve our community and care for others.

By fostering these virtues and values, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School is dedicated to cultivating a community where every pupil feels valued and empowered. We aim to provide an environment where they can grow in their faith and character, and where their unique contributions are celebrated.

The Jesuit Pupil Profile

Jesuit schools take seriously the formation of character, calling pupils, teachers and all of those in the educational community to be grateful and generous, faith-filled, loving and hopeful, to be attentive to their own experience attitudes and reactions, and discerning in the way they make choices and decisions.

Across the world, Jesuit schools seek to form the spirit of their pupils through reflection, the art of discernment, as schools of prayer and faith. There is an attentive care and knowledge of children as individuals which allows them to flourish and provides support and encouragement when life at home or at school is difficult.

The Jesuit Pupil Profile proposes a simple but challenging statement of the qualities we seek to develop in pupils in Jesuit schools, using key words which unfold Ignatius’ own stated aim of “improvement in living and learning for the greater glory of God and the common good.”
