Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum - Spanish

Our Mission Statement

Celebrating Excellence through our Faith and Learning

Intent:

At St Mary’s we believe that our children need a curriculum that allows them to become enthusiastic and engaged learners. We celebrate and pride ourselves on our cultural diversity - a reflection of the Global World our pupils now live in. We believe we must nurture pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding and exploration of the world, by developing a love of language and communication with others. We aim to lay the foundation skills of a MFL, in order that pupils can further develop these at key stage 3 and beyond. At St Mary’s, we want children to see the importance of being able to communicate in other languages and to have an interest in other cultures. The focus of study is therefore on practical conversational communication.

With an ever increasing Spanish speaking population at St Mary’s, Spanish is the MFL we have chosen to adopt. When designing the MFL curriculum, we search for purposeful, meaningful opportunities to extend and deepen the pupil’s learning; we endeavour to make strong links with the diverse multi- cultural backgrounds of the pupils, staff and friends of St Mary’s; Extra-curricular events are used to that celebrate these aspects.

In KS1, we seek to enable pupils to:

  • Gain an understanding that different languages are spoken in the world
  • Learn basic phrases and words that will help introduce them to the new language. For example, they will learn how to say hello, good morning, good afternoon, good evening and goodbye. As well as this, children will be able to introduce themselves and hold a basic conversation.

In KS2, we seek to enable pupils to:

  • express their ideas and thoughts in another language
  • provide wider opportunities for them to communicate for a practical purpose
  • understand and respond to spoken and written language

Pupils will:

  1. listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity
  2. explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  3. engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others
  4. speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  5. develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  6. present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences
  7. read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  8. appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
  9. broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material,
  10. write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
  11. describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
  12. understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.

Implementation:

The knowledge and skills taught in each subject are set out in KS2 The National Curriculum (Department for Education, 2014). We have set these out in a year-group based sequence of learning which allows progression by building upon and revisiting knowledge and skills learnt in previous years.

Lessons will be delivered using the purchased scheme Language Angels. Units of study will be set out across year groups to ensure progression and delivery at the appropriate level:

Impact:

Children are keen and positive about learning another language. They can confidently introduce themselves to others in spoken Spanish and ask basic questions of others to encourage a dialogue/ response. They will be able to communicate for a practical purpose and start to develop an awareness of the associated grammar.

The impact will be evaluated by:

Pupil achievement and progress

We measure pupil achievement – the acquisition of knowledge and skills – and progress using a number of strategies, including:

  • on-going teacher assessments, based on questioning in class, observations and pupil outcomes (which includes their work in books), supported by moderation in school,
  • Scrutiny of progress in books and pupil conferencing with children.
  • Learning walks.

Pupil attitudes

We measure pupil attitudes using a number of strategies, including

  • feedback during learning conversations and in pupil and parent/carer surveys
  • attitudes and behaviour in lessons across the curriculum
  • the quality of the work they produce, including taking pride in presentation
  • attendance and punctuality

Children, particularly older children, will be encouraged to reflect on and self-assess their learning against the outcome of the lesson.
