Starting school … What to expect on the first day!

Starting school can be an exciting time, but can also be an anxious time for some children (and parents!) To lessen any worries or questions you or your child may have, we have prepared this short summary about what to expect on the first day and thereafter.

First Day (plus part time days)

Usual Day (Full time)

Bring to school:

·       Book bag, water bottle

·      PE Kit, waterproofs and wellies (these will stay in school all term)

If bringing in any prescribed medication please drop this off at the school office.

Bring to school:

·        Book bag and water bottle

Come into the playground for 9:25am, the teaching staff will meet you there and direct you to the rear classroom entrance.

You will come into the classroom with your child where they will be shown their peg and drawer and will begin to put away their belongings.

The children will be shown how to self-register and then be free to play where they choose in the classroom.

We encourage parents to leave within a few minutes, once your child has settled. No prolonged goodbyes please, this may unsettle your child (and you!) If your child is struggling to separate, we will assist their separation from you and pay them particular attention until they have settled.

Parents will leave via the main school corridor leading to the front entrance of the school, as the playground gates will be locked. Please leave quietly as the rest of the school will be busy. Please do not use mobile phones anywhere in the school grounds.

From September 9th, please come into the playground and straight round to the rear classroom entrance from 8:45am. The bell will sound at 8:55am to indicate the official start of the school day. All children should be present by then.

Children and parents come into class together. Parents support their child in hanging up coats on their peg, and put their book bag away in their drawer. Please encourage your child to carry their own belongings into class and put them away independently.

There are ‘Linger and Learn’ sessions where you can stay and engage in a short activity with your child until approximately 9:00am.

When asked to leave, parents will leave via the main school corridor leading to the front entrance of the school, as the playground gates will be locked. Please leave quietly as the rest of the school will be busy. Please do not use mobile phones anywhere in the school grounds.

Collect your child from the main door at the front of the school – 12:00pm after just a morning session and 1:15pm after a morning session + lunch. The class teacher will bring the children to you to be dismissed at the front of the school.

Collect your child from the door at the rear of the classroom.
